Steve Massey
Steve has been involved with Inuit in Winnipeg since he was a child. His family operated the Inuit Medical Boarding Home, Ublivik Inuit Centre, from the 1970s-1999. Steve was the Operations Manager until 1999, when the contract for the Centre was awarded to another party.
While managing the Centre, Steve noticed that many Inuit who were permanently living in Winnipeg, always came to the centre to hang out with family and friends who were in Winnipeg for appointments. Sometimes, the people living in Winnipeg would ask Steve if he could help them find housing or apply for social assistance. Ublivik Inuit Centre became the hub where Inuit gathered.Steve had plans to start a friendship centre for local Inuit but when the contract was awarded to another party, those plans had to be put on hold.
He has now realized this dream by helping to create and manage the Tunngasugit Inuit Resource Centre.
